Our Story

A family restaurant that has become part of the Algarve story for generations of visitors.

FAMILY-RUN SINCE 1975*

51 YEARS OF CHICKEN. FIRE. FAMILY.

Some restaurants are created around a concept.

Chicken George grew around a family, a grill and the people who kept coming back.

For decades, visitors travelling through Carvoeiro, Benagil and Lagoa have found their way to George’s table. Often not because of advertising. Because somebody who had eaten there before told them:

“You have to go to Chicken George.”

Then they came back the following year. And the year after that.

*Public and customer historical evidence describes Chicken George as a family business dating from 1975 — owner confirmation recommended before final production use.

Before websites. Before apps. There was George.

Long before online reservations, QR codes and restaurant apps, Chicken George was already doing things its own way.

The formula was uncomplicated. Chicken over the fire. Piri-piri. Simple food. Time. And George.

People came for dinner and found something difficult to reproduce anywhere else: a restaurant with a personality of its own.

Old visitor accounts describe George showing customers the huge collection of photographs of friends, regulars and visitors accumulated around the restaurant.

People did not simply pass through Chicken George. They became part of it.

Thousands of meals. Thousands of memories.

Holidaymakers. Local families. Friends. Regulars who returned summer after summer. Children sitting at the table with their parents.

Over the years those visitors became part of the restaurant’s story.

The family archive

More than fifty years around the grill leaves a lot of photographs.

We’re going back through the family archive. More of the story is still to come.

To take away

Cooked when you ordered it

Chicken George was never built around speed. It was built around the grill.

Old customers remembered food being cooked specifically when it was ordered. Takeaway customers were advised to telephone ahead.

And there is an even better piece of Chicken George folklore: customers remembered takeaway being available if you brought your own plate.

No app. No branded box. Bring your plate. George cooks the chicken. Take it home.

Through the years

  1. 1975*

Public/customer historical evidence describes Chicken George as a family business dating from 1975.

  2. Mid-1980s

Independent customer evidence from 2006 says they had already been visiting for more than twenty years.

  3. 2000s

Customers were already sharing stories online about George, the food, the photographs and returning every holiday.

  4. 2010s

Visitors who had been away for years were still asking the same question: “Is George still there?”

  5. 2020s

A remarkable thing started becoming obvious: some people who first visited Chicken George as children were returning as adults with children of their own.

  6. 2026

If the 1975 family date is confirmed by George/Tania: 51 years.

They came back

Some customers have been coming to Chicken George for so long that the children who once sat at George’s table are now parents bringing their own children through the same door. That is something advertising cannot manufacture.

One generation came as children. The next generation came with them.

The man behind the fire

For thousands of visitors, Chicken George and George himself became almost impossible to separate.

The restaurant never needed a corporate brand story. George was the story.

The grill. The photographs. The humour. The wait while something was cooked properly. The simplicity of the place.

And the fact that when people returned to the Algarve years later, they wanted to know: “Is George still there?”

The original chicken

Chicken George already had its rooster. The new version cleans him up for a new generation without replacing what people recognise.

White feathers. Blue eyes. Thumbs up. And the Portuguese flag exactly where it belongs.

The next generation

The story doesn’t end with George. Today, George’s niece Tania works at Chicken George. As customers who first came here as children begin returning with children of their own, another generation of George’s family is becoming part of the restaurant too. No corporate succession announcement. No fake rebrand. Just another generation around the same family business.

The customers came back. The family carried on.

Summer evenings

Still simple

The world around Chicken George has changed. Visitors now arrive with smartphones instead of their own takeaway plates. They speak Portuguese, English, German, French, Spanish, Dutch, Italian, Russian and Polish.

The restaurant can now meet them with a multilingual website and Ask George. But the things that matter do not need reinventing.

Fire. Chicken. Piri-piri. Family. Portugal.

More than half a century around the grill.

Come for dinner. Become part of the story.
